Spin the wheel

Add your names or choices, spin the wheel, and let it pick one at random.

6 entries

Picked on your device with your browser's secure random numbers: each line has the same chance.

How to use the wheel

  1. Write your entries in the box, one on each line: names, places, meals, tasks. The wheel shows them as you type.
  2. Press Spin, or click the wheel. It turns for a few seconds, then stops.
  3. The entry under the arrow at the top is the pick, and it’s shown under the wheel.
  4. To pick again without the same winner, press Remove under its name: its line leaves the box, and you can spin again.

Shuffle mixes your lines into a random order. It doesn’t change anyone’s chance; it just moves the slices around the wheel.

How the pick works

When you press Spin, the winner is picked first, with your browser’s secure random numbers, the same kind it uses for passwords. Then the wheel turns several times and stops at a random place inside the winner’s slice, never on a line between two slices, so there’s no doubt about the result.

Every line has the same chance: with 6 lines, each has a 1 in 6 chance, about 17%. Nothing you do changes it: not how often you spin, not where the wheel was before.

Your entries stay on your device: nothing is sent to EasiFox or anyone else.

An example

Six friends want to decide in what order they present their projects. They type their names:

Alex Sam Jordan Taylor Riley Morgan

The first spin stops on Riley: Riley goes first. They press Remove “Riley” from the wheel, and 5 names are left, each now with a 1 in 5 chance. Four more spins, removing each winner, give the whole order, and the last name left goes last.

Ideas for the wheel

  • In class: pick who answers next, who reads aloud, or a topic for each group. Remove each pupil once picked, so everyone gets a turn.
  • At home: who does the dishes, what to cook tonight, which film to watch.
  • At work: who speaks first at the stand-up, who takes notes, which task to start with.
  • With friends: a game’s order of play, a forfeit, a restaurant.
  • Online: the winner of a giveaway or a raffle, with your screen recorded for proof.
  • When you can’t decide: put your choices on the wheel and spin. If you feel let down by the result, that’s a sign you wanted another one.

Tips

  • Give some entries more chance by writing them on more lines: three lines of “Pizza” and one of “Salad” make pizza three times as likely.
  • Keep names short: long ones are cut on the wheel to fit their slice, but the full name shows under it.
  • To pick several winners, spin once for each and remove each winner, so no one wins twice.
  • For teams, spin and remove in turn, giving each winner to the next team, until no names are left.
  • Keep your list: copy it from the box into a note before you leave, as it isn’t saved.

Spin the wheel: questions and answers

Is the wheel really random?

Yes. When you press Spin, your browser's secure random numbers, the kind used for passwords, pick the winning line and where in its slice the wheel stops. Every line has exactly the same chance, and the spin shows the pick.

Can I give one entry more chance than the others?

Yes. Write it on more lines. With "Pizza" on two lines out of five, pizza has a 2 in 5 chance, or 40%, against 1 in 5, or 20%, for each of the others.

How many entries can the wheel hold?

As many as you like. With more than about 60 the slices are too thin for their names, but the wheel still picks fairly and shows the winner's name below it.

Are my entries saved?

No. They stay in this page, on your device, until you close or reload it. Keep your list in a note if you'll need it again.

Can I use it to pick a giveaway winner?

Yes. Put each entrant on a line, once each (or once per entry if the rules allow several), and record your screen while you spin, so people can see the draw was fair.
