Counted on your device: your text is never sent anywhere.
How to use the word counter
- Type in the box, or paste your text into it (Ctrl+V, or Cmd+V on a Mac).
- The counts above the box change with every key you press: there’s nothing to click.
- Edit the text in the box until it fits your limit, then copy it back where you need it.
- Press Clear to empty the box and start again.
Your text stays on your device: the counting is done by your browser, and nothing is sent to EasiFox or anyone else. That makes it safe for drafts, school work and anything private.
What each count means
- Words: anything between two spaces (or line breaks) that holds a letter or a digit. “Don’t”, “e-mail” and “2026” are one word each; a dash or a “&” on its own isn’t a word.
- Characters: every character you see, plus spaces and line breaks. An emoji or an accented letter counts as one.
- Characters (no spaces): the same, without spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- Sentences: the parts of your text that end with a full stop, a question mark or an exclamation mark, or with a line break. An abbreviation like “Mr.” can add one now and then.
- Paragraphs: the lines that hold some text. Blank lines between your paragraphs don’t count.
- Reading time: how long most adults take to read your text silently, at 238 words a minute.
An example
Paste these two short paragraphs into the box:
EasiFox counts as you type. Paste a draft, check its length, and trim it to fit.
It’s free, and your text never leaves your device.
The counter shows:
| Count | Result |
|---|---|
| Words | 25 |
| Characters | 132 |
| Characters (no spaces) | 107 |
| Sentences | 3 |
| Paragraphs | 2 |
| Reading time | 6 sec |
“It’s” is one word, the blank line between the paragraphs counts as two characters (two line breaks) but not as a paragraph, and 25 words at 238 a minute take about 6 seconds to read.
Limits worth knowing
Many places cap how long your text can be. Here are some common ones:
| Where | Limit |
|---|---|
| A post on X (Twitter) | 280 characters |
| A text message (SMS) | 160 characters, or 70 with an emoji |
| A YouTube video title | 100 characters |
| An Instagram caption | 2,200 characters |
| A LinkedIn post | 3,000 characters |
| A Common App college essay | 650 words |
| The title Google shows for a page | about 60 characters |
| The description Google shows for a page | about 155 characters |
For a talk, count on 130 to 150 words a minute: a five-minute speech is about 700 words.
Tips for hitting a word count
Too long? Cut words that add nothing (“very”, “really”, “in order to”), turn long phrases into one word (“at this point in time” becomes “now”), and drop sentences that repeat an earlier one. Cutting a whole paragraph you don’t need is often easier than trimming every sentence.
Too short? Add an example, a number or a reason to your main points rather than filler. A reader notices padding; an example makes your point stronger and adds words.
Check what’s counted. Some limits count characters with spaces, some without, and some count words. When a form cuts your text off or a teacher’s count differs, check which one they mean.
Word counter: questions and answers
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser, on your own device. Your text isn't uploaded, saved or shared, and it's gone when you close or reload the page, so keep a copy of anything you need.
Do numbers count as words?
Yes. "2026" or "42" counts as one word, as in most word processors. A symbol on its own, like "&" or a dash between two spaces, doesn't count.
Does the character count include spaces?
The "Characters" count includes every space and line break; "Characters (no spaces)" leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks. Most limits, like an X post's 280 characters, count spaces, so check the first one.
How is the reading time worked out?
Your word count is divided by 238 words a minute, the average silent reading speed of adults found by a large 2019 review of reading studies. Dense or technical text takes longer, and light fiction a little less.
Why does Word or Google Docs give a slightly different count?
Each program has its own rules for dashes, symbols, numbers and links. The difference is usually a word or two in a page. If a teacher or editor set the limit, use the count of the program they use.
How many words are on a page?
About 500 words on a single-spaced page and 250 on a double-spaced one, with 12-point type and normal margins. Short paragraphs, headings and lists lower it.
